GOSHEN, N.Y. (March 14, 2017) – Glen Arden Continuing Care Retirement Community residents and guests were recently treated to the performance “Abigail Adams – Remember the Ladies,” by Kim Hanley of the American Historical Theatre (AHT) in Philadelphia.
Hanley, an actor, singer, costumer and dancer, began interpreting Adams with AHT in 1997. She has appeared at the White House Visitors Center, the National Archives, the National Portrait Gallery, the Constitution Center and the Independence Visitors Center, among other locales, in addition to libraries throughout New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia areas.
Adams was an educated upper class woman whose well-articulated opinions on government, politics and life in general influenced at least two American presidents: her husband President John Adams, and her son President John Quincy Adams. She is probably best remembered for her letter asking her husband to “…remember the ladies…” when enacting new laws. She asked John to limit the power of husbands over their wives, advocating the creation of legislation which would empower women with property ownership and access to educational and political opportunities.
Hanley’s other character portrayals include Annie Oakley, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lucretia Mott, Mary Young Pickersgill, Betsy Ross, Molly Pitcher, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Alice Roosevelt’s maid Anna, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and Grace Coolidge.
“Bringing performances like Kim Hanley’s to Glen Arden is another example of our commitment to offering a full array of social and educational programming to our residents,” said Lois DiStefano, Glen Arden’s director of sales.
