What is a CCRC?
Continued Care Retirement Communities provide their residents with multiple levels of living which include independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing. CCRCs exist to allow their residents to “age in place,” which means that they are able to live in the residence of their choice, as long as they are able, as they age.
How CCRC’s Address Changes in Care Levels
Many residents enter Continued Care Retirement Communities at independent living. At this level of living, many healthy adults live in their own apartment. In independent living, residents live independently and have a high quality of life. As time goes on and their level of care needs change, they can move to assisted living or a skilled nursing area that is in the same community.
Benefits of Continued Care Retirement Communities
CCRCs are beneficial to all seniors, whether they are single, married or partnered, widowed, in great health, or have health challenges. CCRCs are great for spouses and partners who have different living levels. One spouse/partner can stay in an apartment and still see their spouse/partner who requires a higher level of care. No matter difference in living levels, spouses and friends can still enjoy many activities together. Also, for those who do not have a spouse/partner, are widowed, or do not have adult children, CCRCs offer social connections.
